The Detective Bureau’s responsibilities include the investigation of criminal incidents throughout Boone County and assisting with the prosecution of individuals responsible for those criminal incidents. The Detective Bureau conducts investigations into a wide variety of criminal activities ranging from illegal drug activity, identity theft, property crimes, domestic violence to homicides, sexual assaults, armed robberies, arson and home invasions.

The Detective Bureau consists of five deputies and one Sergeant. In addition, there is one deputy assigned to the Rockford DEA office and another assigned to the Northern Illinois Auto Theft Task Force. Another specialized section of the Detectives Bureau is one school resource officer with a deputy assigned to Belvidere North High School.

Additional responsibilities include registering and tracking convicted sex offenders, following up on Crime Stoppers tips from the citizens of Boone County and crime scene processing. The Detective Bureau operates 8-5 Monday through Friday and on a rotating on-call schedule to ensure detectives are available twenty-four hours per day.
